Fancy an interiors refresh this autumn?

Following months of anticipation, Farrow & Ball released nine new colours on 20th September this year at the London Design Festival. Their first exciting launch since 2016, the new colours will join the company’s existing collection of 132 wonderfully timeless and curated shades. From a deep red to a soft off-white and a down to earth blue, we thought we would highlight a few of our favourites from the new line-up to show how we would use them, where we would use them and what we would style them with.

For the bedroom, living room, hallway or utility room, we’ve selected six of the nine new shades to suit a modern country home.

A protective olive green

Cited as a darker version of the now archived Olive No. 13, this modern mid-century green is both calm and serene. Taking its name from Japanese tea leaves, it’s the perfect hue for pairing with soft pinks and textured browns. A beautiful colour for the kitchen, we’ve paired this Farrow & Ball shade with our traditional Oakland range for a rustic country-inspired feel. For a softer pairing, our Lundy Stone Grey range complements its rich tone perfectly too.

An ideal shade for a feature wall, to paint the kitchen cabinets or even the kitchen island, introducing oak furniture will help to add warmth – making this much-used communal space one that is welcoming and timeless.

A down to earth and grounding blue

An ideal shade that will complement the many different rooms in your home, De Nimes is inspired by the cloth of everyday workwear made in the French city of Nîmes. A timeless shade, much like denim, this Farrow & Ball shade is both elegant and contemporary and will suit either traditional or more modern homes.

A welcoming and unique shade for the hallway, we’ve paired it with the warm ivory of Portobello Painted and the softness of Chester Grey, together with pops of complementing blue hues and rustic accessories.

A relaxed brown based neutral

A more unusual shade that will suit larger rooms with high ceilings, Jitney sits between the similar Farrow & Ball shades of Oxford Stone No. 264 and Elephant’s Breath No. 229. A subtle and muted shade that inspires reminiscences of lazy days spent beside the sea, Farrow & Ball state the colour shares its name with the bus that whisks New Yorkers off to the picturesque beaches of the Hamptons.

A perfect pairing for our painted grey furniture ranges – particularly Chester Grey and Florence Grey – we love the idea of mixing Jitney with rich, jewel shades to complement its subtle elegance. While opulent textures, like velvet and wool, will help to create a cosy yet timeless living room to retreat to.

A chic red based black

A more daring shade, Paean Black is perfect for those more boho or contemporary homes. Said to be a Georgian-inspired colour reminiscent of the shade of old leather hymnals, Farrow & Ball reveal it is named after a song of praise.

If you do favour a darker shade in your home, Paean Black is a tempting choice for the dining room. A cosy and welcoming shade when paired with complementary furniture and accessories, we think our elegant Ellenborough Painted collection will work wonderfully to neutralise it, especially with the addition of natural, rustic accessories. If you fancy incorporating this more ‘distinguished’ shade, try painting Paean Black on a feature wall or chimney breast to create a striking and contemporary feel.

A romantic and muted rose

A beautifully soft and powdery blush shade with bundles of warmth, Sulking Room Pink is an easy and accessible shade making it a perfect hue for the bedroom. Interestingly, ‘boudoir’ is named after the French ‘bouder’, meaning to sulk.

To complement the softness of this muted rose shade then, we think our crisp and clean Chantilly White bedroom range pairs beautifully. Adding metallic accessories and blush-toned soft furnishings will create a timeless and feminine feel while house plants and dried foliage will add a touch of contemporary charm.

A dark grey green

A traditional yet contemporary dark green version of Farrow & Ball’s popular Pigeon No. 25, this is a perfectly rich shade for modern country homes. Ideal for pairing with natural wood accessories, we think Treron makes the perfect colour for the boot room or utility room, especially when painted over panelled walls or doors.

From our Chester Grey range to our Wiltshire Painted collection, the subtlety of the grey and buttery cream yellow will help to soften this smoky dark grey-green. Add practical, natural accessories for hanging linens, storing wellies and stowing away washing detergents for a true country-inspired space.

Also available in the new Farrow & Ball range is Rangwali No. 296 (an exotic and adventurous pink), School House White No. 291 (a soft off-white) and Preference Red No. 297 (a deep, rich red).

As a rule, when it comes to choosing a new paint shade – especially if it’s one out of your comfort zone – we would always recommend painting a small tester on your wall of choice first. It’s always important to see what the shade will look like at different times of the day and in different lights.
