In the second part of our Spring Series, we’re talking all things Bedroom. As we come into the brighter months of spring, we are no longer met with those damp, dark mornings which seem to make it nigh-on impossible to wake from our sleepy slumbers. The start of spring means – for many of us – that we now wake to birdsong and blue skies. While of course, we can still expect the odd drizzly day of rain and grey clouds, the sun is rising much earlier; which helps getting up all the more easier!

What about those days where we needn’t rely on our alarms though? Those rare days that we can enjoy a guilt-free lay-in? It is these mornings when we are particularly grateful for a relaxing, personal and beautiful space in which to laze and savour.

As we mentioned in Three Small Room Updates, spring presents the perfect opportunity for a refresh. While in that post we were focusing more on those rooms we don’t tend to relax in, here we’re thinking about the one room in which you do. A room that, quite possibly, can impact every day living the most. It isn’t just the mornings where we can appreciate our bedrooms either; after a long and tiresome day, there is little more tempting than walking into your bedroom and seeing your bed. Make it a calm, serene and relaxing place to return to then, whatever its size.

Go white – If you’re looking to make your bedroom feel light, bright and welcoming, using neutral tones, textures and colours will naturally help. White painted furniture – like our Chantilly White and Burford Painted collections – is both practical and versatile and a great option if you want to use a splash of colour on the walls. If you’re prone to changing your mind when it comes to paint shades, white painted furniture will continue to slot in seamlessly too – so it’s a perfectly timeless option.

Mirrors – This may seem obvious, but the best way to make a room appear bigger is by introducing a little bit of trickery. Mirrors reflect light, whether you hang them, lean them or pop them on a shelf, so they’re a brilliant and worthwhile investment if you’re decorating a smaller bedroom.

Textures – Think about the materials you add into your bedroom. While these won’t necessarily help a space to feel bigger, they will help to make it feel cosy and welcoming. Introducing soft furnishings – like rugs, throws and cushions – will make it homely and more personal too. When not in use, you can always store them in one of our handy blanket boxes too – just pop it at the end of your bed or underneath the window.

Natural elements – If you’d like to create a more country-inspired bedroom to retreat to each night, it’s all about hues and textures. Think light, natural and rustic. Both our Camille Limewash Oak and Ellenborough Painted ranges have a white-wash wood effect giving the appearance of age and nostalgia. While accessories designed from natural materials like our baskets and wool-blend throws will add comfort and practicality.

Painted furniture – Much like a neutral scheme, the colours for a bedroom inspired by a traditional, country scheme should be light, whimsical and warm. Painted furniture allows you to change the whole look and feel of a room without even needing to pick up a paintbrush or redecorate – ideal if you’re renting your home or not big on DIY!

Storage – This can be utilised whatever your preferred scheme is. If you have a smaller bedroom, space is everything, so maximising storage is essential. If you’re lucky enough to have high ceilings, make the most of them with shelving – ideal for displaying books, boxes and knick-knacks. Our Combi Wardrobes make a perfect addition too. They combine hanging space with shelving in a small and compact design that’ll slot seamlessly into smaller bedrooms – or attic bedrooms with sloping ceilings – and yet continue to provide an abundance of storage.

Go dark – While we’re often told that going with lighter colours and neutral furniture will make a room feel bigger – the perfect solution for smaller bedrooms – having a room that feels intimate and cosy can actually come from using darker shades too. Our Westcote Blue bedroom range fits the bill perfectly blending country charm with rich, contemporary design. Introducing darker textures – like our Light Oak Blanket Box – will complement a dark scheme perfectly too – and provide much-needed storage!

A focal point – Following on from the point above, we may instinctively move away from larger items of furniture for fear they may make a room feel even smaller, but introducing a big piece of furniture can actually create a focal point. This, in turn, can make the room feel cosy and more personal. Our beautiful Middleton Metal Beds are ideal for making a statement. Sturdy and heavy with beautiful detailing, they’re perfect for adding an opulent and luxury touch.

Think tall – This is another point that can be utilised however you decide to decorate your bedroom, but one that works particularly well if you’re refreshing a smaller space. If you’re limited on floor-space, make the most of furniture that goes up rather than across. Our Chambery Grey Tallboy includes five spacious drawers but takes up little space in spite of the storage it provides. In a similar vein, why not double up your getting-ready station with your office space using one of our handy dressing tables? It’s almost like a 2-in-1 purchase!
