Christmas Table Ideas

With Christmas slowly creeping up on us (only a few more weeks to go!) our thoughts turn to the Christmas table. Whether you’re hosting the festive feast at home or planning a Boxing Day brunch for family, decorating the dining table is the perfect way to get you – and your guests – in the festive spirit. From colour schemes to foliage, centre-pieces to place names, planning well in advance can help it all to run smoothly on the day – and ensure it looks beautiful too.

Pick a theme

Now, of course, you don’t have to, but choosing a ‘theme’ of sorts – even if it’s a colour scheme – can really help to give direction to your Christmas table. Perhaps you prefer the simple Scandinavian feel of whites and metallics, or fancy a more rustic approach with wood, pops of red and plenty of foliage. Flowers are the perfect way to touch on a colour scheme without going over-the-top.

For subtle elegance, try introducing hints of silvery blue with eucalyptus, thistles and juniper stems.

Or, take a more traditional route with red berries – or cranberries – and pine cones.

Snowberries and kitchen herbs – like rosemary and bay – make beautiful and aromatic additions to centre-pieces too.

By choosing your favourite foliage, your Christmas table will dutifully follow suit.

The centre-piece

Foliage can also help with the layout of your Christmas table. Try arranging a few stems and berries down the middle or pop a few festive favourites – mini fir trees or pine cones – in flower pots or glass vases for the centre. A wooden tray or board offers a perfect base for your centre-piece while candles and fairy lights can help to provide a warm glow too.

It’s not just about the festive flora at this time of year, seasonal fruits make lovely centre-piece additions too. From pomegranates and cranberries to pears, figs and berries. Place in glass jars with strings of warm fairy lights, or intertwined with table foliage for a more rustic, informal feel.

Crockery & cutlery

Choosing what crockery and cutlery to use at Christmas may feel like a big decision, but it’s worth noting basic white china can work beautifully; especially when adorned with festive foliage, warm lights and dainty decor. White also offers a good base for every colour scheme. Whether you choose red, green, blue or gold, it’ll happily complement your neutral place settings perfectly. Gold cutlery will add a hint of seasonal elegance while mismatched glassware adds a charming and informal feel.

Final touches

The finishing touches. The point where everything comes together. Paper or linen, napkins create the perfect opportunity to use up any leftover foliage, and the chance to get a little creative. Place cards are a nice idea that can add a personal touch and we love the idea of decorating your dining chairs too. Lastly, don’t forget about the crackers!

However you decide to decorate, we hope you have a lovely festive feast.
